Harry Potter:



Harry Potter is the protagonist (main character) and hero of the story. Harry was orphaned as an infant after his parents were murdered by an evil wizard named Voldemort. Harry survives the attack and becomes famous throughout the wizard world as, “the boy who lived.”After his parents death Harry was sent to live with his mother’s sister, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon and their son Dudley. While living with his Aunt and Uncle Harry is treated as a servant in an unloving environment. Because of this treatment Harry starts off as timid and unsure of his capabilities yet is humble and kind. Once he transitions into the Wizarding world where his is famous Harry continues to show these characteristics and thrives in his new surroundings. He goes from being a lost and lonely boy in strange surroundings in the beginning of the film to becoming a boy with friends and a place he feels is home.

Vernon Dursley: 



Vernon Dursley is Harry’s upper-middle class uncle is a character whose role is to give contrast between the Wizard and the Muggle worlds. He is used to emphasize how different these worlds are and display the feelings, assumptions, judgments passed by humans onto wizards. He displays the inability to empathize and understand people different from himself.



Petunia Dursley:

Petunia Dursley is Harry Potter’s self-consumed aunt. She spoils her son (Dudley) and uses Harry as a domestic servant. She we find out in time that Petunia was jealous of her sister, Lilly Potter (Harry’s mother), because Lily was a witch and had special powers.



Dudley Dursley:

Dudley is Harry’s plump cousin who bullies Harry and follows in his mother’s footsteps when it comes to Harry being treated as a severely inferior servant to the family rather than an accepted and included member of a family unit.


Draco Malfoy:



After escaping the home of the Dursley’s for while Harry is in school, Harry finds himself once more at odds with yet another bully, Draco Malfoy. Following their sour introduction, Draco becomes one of Harry’s enemies and serves as a constant conflict to Harry at Hogwarts. Draco comes from one of the wealthiest wizard families who have a long line of “purebloods”. These are wizards have values of only breeding with other wizards and oppose any muggle/wizard mixing of blood. They consider themselves superior to other wizards who have muggle relations.





Professor Minerva McGonagall: 






McGonagall is a wise and faithful servant of Dumbledore and Hogwarts School where she serves as the head of Gryffindor house. She is a feminine leader with a strong mind, adherence to rules, and yet, displays the nurturing and compassionate traits of a mother figure.


Professor Severus Snape: 






Snape is the potions professor and head of Slitheryn house at Hogwarts who holds a constant air of suspicion by readers/viewers. Snape displays a dislike of Harry and is portrayed as the potential enemy throughout the film. Snape’s personality is malevolent, dark, void of emotion, and judgmental in nature.




Voldemort: 



In Voldemort lies Harry’s ultimate nemesis. At the height of his power, Voldemort was leader of a movement to cleanse the world of wizard who had muggle blood in them. He is a powerful wizard who was damaged when he killed Harry’s parents and his own spell backfired upon him. The love of Harry’s mother protected Harry from Voldemort’s attempt to murder Harry. In the film, Voldemort is barely alive and using any resources he can to stay alive while he attempts to break into Hogwarts and get the Sorcerer’s Stone.



Professor Quirrell: 



Quirrell is a new seemingly innocent teacher who is hired to be the defense against the dark arts teacher at Hogwarts. He comes off as a stuttering and timid wizard who is fearful and innocent. On the contrary, Quirrell uses this image to penetrate Hogwarts to obtain the Sorcerer’s Stone that is being hidden for safekeeping. The stone enables the production of the elixir of life. Quirrell is a follower of Voldemort and seeks to get the stone in order to help the critically weakened Voldemort rise to power once again.




Hermione Granger:


Hermione is a strong headed and witty student at Hogwarts who befriends Harry on the train ride to the school. She is the epitome of a straight-edged nerd. She comes from an all muggle family and is very much out of her element while she struggles to adjust to the wizard world. Over the course of the film her friendship with Ron Weasley and Harry Potter grows stronger as they form a team to defeat the evils at work on the grounds of Hogwarts.



Ron Weasley: 






Ron is a first-year student just like Harry and Hermione. Unlike Hermione, Ron comes from a “pureblood” wizard family. Ron has the opposite characteristics of Draco Malfoy. Though they both come from “pureblood” Wizarding families Ron’s family is impoverished and large. Ron meets Harry on the train and becomes Harry’s first real friend. Ron is average in skill and intelligence and he lacks the determination held by Harry and Hermione. In the end, Ron proves his loyalty and value as he helps fight evil with his friends.


Albus Dumbledore: 


Dumbledore is a famous and powerful wizard who is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This character is the symbolic role of the wise old man who possesses wisdom and knowledge. Dumbledore is kind and understanding to his students as they go through their growth in self realization and struggles during their adolescence.



Rubuis Hagrid: 



Hagrid is keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts. He is a half-giant who is a kindhearted and loyal servant to Dumbledore. He is sensitive and emotional in character and is childlike in his role as a friend and confidant to the threesome of Ron, Hermione, and Harry.
