Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a film adaptation of the bestselling novel by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The story is about the trials and tribulations about a young orphaned boy named Harry Potter. After his parents’ murders Harry is placed with his inhospitable Aunt and Uncle Dursley and Dudley; their spoiled and vicious bully of a child. After the succession of a series of strange events Harry finds himself caught in the middle of two worlds, the one he grew up in known as the Muggle world and the world of the Wizards.

On his eleventh birthday Harry is confronted with the information that he is a wizard. In addition to this new information he is asked accept his place in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he will develop his Wizarding knowledge and skill under the headmastership of a famous wizard, Albus Dumbledore. Harry accepts this change in circumstance over the servitude in which he was living under his Aunt and Uncle and he accepts Hagrid’s help in going to the Wizard school. In a short amount of time Harry befriends two young first year wizards named Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, both of which prove to be valuable and cherished friends to Harry.

Over their time at Hogwarts Ron, Harry, and Hermione find themselves involved in mysterious events that are occurring at Hogwarts School. The threesome teams up to conduct their own undercover investigation trying to reveal what the mystery is and how it involves the man who killed Harry ’s parents, Lord Voldemort. The kids all make an effort to go to the authorities but in the end it is the resourcefulness of the three which discovers the details of how Voldemort is trying to infiltrate the school to get a powerful tool which will help him regain his lost powers, the Sorcerer’s Stone. They also find that in order for him to do this, Voldemort has to have the help of a Hogwarts insider and the three kids wrongly assume this helper is potions professor, Severus Snape.

In the end, the kids are left to defend Hogwarts on their own against the most evil wizard ever know and Harry’s mortal enemy, Lord Voldemort. Victorious in the end, the three children discover more than just the answers to a mystery. They discover what they can do as individual and themselves as they go through their own adventures of self-discovery. Harry finds family and a place to belong, a drastic contrast to his life under the Dursley’s. He finds bravery and talent in himself as he faces great challenges with Voldemort as well as his peers. This how Harry’s first year as a part of the wizard world begins for Harry and it is quite the adventure!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was nominated in 2002 for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, and Best Music, Original Score. The American Film Institute nominated it for Digital Effects Artist of the Year. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media in 2003. The movie was released Nov. 2001 and by Feb. 2002 it was the second highest grossing film worldwide after Titanic. The book that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is based on reached the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999, and stayed near the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000.
