“About the Film Guide Concept”
The concept of the motion picture study guide used here is taken from those developed by The Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) and more recently in the United States by Walden Media. The approach is also consistent with the series, Film Clips for Character Education, sponsored by The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (www.filmclipsonline.com). Appalachian State University has pioneered this work in the U.S. and our curricular work with movie guides has been featured in The Middle Ground and The Journal of Media Literacy among other publications.
Education in today's world entails the incorporation of media literacy as an extension of established literacy standard of reading and writing. A significant part of media literacy relates to the way students learn to think critically about all content which convey a message. The modern learner lives in a world full of messages from all types of media from reading printed text to drawing inferences out of advertisements they see on television. Curriculum all over the country has embraced the concept of expanding literacy content core goals and standard to re-focus and broaden the goals for the 21st century learner. This film guide is build upon ideas developed by the Australian Teachers of Media. Their main concept lies upon the value of teaching to the students strengths and interests because students' A.I.M.E., or amount of invested mental energy/effort, will rise, helping them to succeed in their learning environment. This guide is meant to use the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as relative media to enhance learning in the classroom.
